Book: Mr B Reading Subscription - Book 1 - The Honours

How it appears fresh from the mailing package
taken slightly apart...
I heard about this little book haven in Bath, England called Mr B's Book Emporium.

I had been to Bath, about 15 years ago, but I was not fortunate enough to have stumbled upon this gem. Nonetheless, the internet is an amazing resource, so I have been able to benefit from their existence from afar.

One of the things Mr B's offers is a subscription service. They first get information from the subscriber, then they pick a new book for the subscriber each month based on that information. They offer 3-, 6-, and 11-month subscriptions. I bought the 11-month service as a special treat to myself for having given birth.
The stamped quote

New mothers deserve special treats! Or else I was seriously sleep-deprived and justified the special treat as deserved to myself...

I received a detailed questionnaire by email that made me feel as if they were actually going to get it right for me, elected to have spoiler emails sent (they simply ask if you have read a book by a certain author -- recommended for the voracious reader and/or the heavy book owner), and was on my way.  This post reflects Book 1.

I was beyond excited. A special book, picked just for me, by a bookseller in Bath England, a special city in its own right.

And then, look at how it was packaged! This beautifully wrapped (as of yet unknown) book came with a card and a message to me, topped off with a wax seal and a beautiful, heavy-duty bookmark.

As you can see, the wrapping also had a quote stamped on: "We are too fond of books, and it has turned our brains..."

The message on the backside of the card welcomes you to the reading subscription and introduces you to your "bibliotherapist" (the person in charge of selecting your books for your subscription).

It also indicates that, if you are unhappy with a selection, you can let them know and they will continue to "tailor [their] choices to [your] preferences."

Excellent.

And now, to the goods...

Back of the Sleeve
I included 3 different pictures of this book because it was such a beautiful book! Even if it didn't end up being something I was otherwise interested in, I would have wanted this book based on its appearance alone! The book is The Honours by Tim Clare.

The back describes the book as follows: 1935. Norfolk. War is looming in Great Britain and the sprawling country estate of Alderberen Hall is shadowed by suspicion and paranoia. Its newest resident, Miss Delphine Venner, is determined to uncover the secrets of the Hall's elite society, which has taken in her gullible mother and unstable father. As she explores the house and discovers the secret network of hidden passages that thread through the estate, Delphine uncovers a world more dark and threatening than she ever could have imagined. With the help of head gamekeeper Mr. Garforth, Delphine must learn the bloody lessons of war and find the soldier within herself in time to battle the deadly forces amassing in the woods...

Yep, sounds interesting! Can't wait to read Book 1! Thank you Mr B & Emma!
